A clean desk means that you will be able to focus easier and hopefully get more done. If your desk isn’t filled with clutter and is neat and organised, then there should be fewer distractions. We’re going to give you a few daily habits you can cultivate to keep your desk looking great.

Put Things Away as You Use Them

You should have a place for everything on your desk. If you have a spot for each item that you use, then there will be less risk of your desk cluttering up to where it becomes unusable. You may need to buy some containers to place items like pens, pencils and small tools in. You should also have a paper storage container on your desk for all your documents so they won’t clutter your desk. If you simply put things where they go every time you go to lunch and every time you leave the office, then you will have a much more organised desk.

Don’t Eat Anything at Your Desk

Eating at your desk not only increases the chance that you will leave some clutter behind, but it also means that you have some spills and accidents there that could be tough to clean up or that could damage items on your desk. Try keeping a clean desk when you spill a soda all over your paperwork and the liquid seeps into your desk drawers. If this does happen, though, then you may want to hire a cleaning agency to take care of that mess for you. They can get your desk clean a lot easier than you can. It’s better to just do your eating in the break room where the surfaces are designed to handle spills of all kinds. Not eating at your desk just makes it that much easier to keep things looking neat and clutter free.

Strive to Have a Digital Workspace

If you can eliminate a lot of paperwork on your desk, you can have so much more space to work with. This is going to take some effort on your part, but you can be pushing yourself and your co-workers toward a digital future where there is a lot less clutter on everyone’s desk. Try to have workplace memos sent via email or some other digital means. Messages to co-workers or work duty lists can be sent the same way. Instead of clogging everyone’s desks with more paper, try to find digital solutions. If you start it, others may follow and help you to keep your desk looking a whole lot tidier.

Assess What You Really Need

Many people have cluttered desks because they simply throw nothing out and never store anything away. The birthday cards, old memos and knick-knacks don’t have to stay on your desk. It may be okay to leave items like these on your desk for a couple of days, but you need make it a daily habit to assess what is on your desk and if it contributes to your working environment. Get rid of anything that is a distraction. That doesn’t necessarily mean throw it out, but you can at least store it away.
