It’s time for spring cleaning again, and as you prepare to open he windows, air out the house and move the furniture around, we want you to keep a few cleaning tips in mind that will make the work easier and protect your belongings.

Know How to Clean Your Carpets

This may be the only time you really do a thorough cleaning on your carpet, so it is the perfect time to let you know that not all carpets will need to be cleaned in the same way. Some of them need special cleaning methods that will not harm them, and if you use the same cleaning method on every type of carpet, then it can damage the carpet, causing it to fade or destroying the fibers that hold it together. Look at the tag your carpet has, read the cleaning instructions it came with or look up your particular type of carpet online to find cleaning instructions that are written for it specifically.

Clean from Top to Bottom

As you clean your walls, your curtains or anywhere else in our house, start at the top and work your way down. That way, as you clean, you will be moving dust and dirt to the dirty areas that you have not cleaned already instead of the other way around. You will minimize the work you have to do, as well as be able to go from a standing position to a squatting or sitting position when you get down to the floor to clean. That’s just more convenient cleaning for you, so keep this in mind as you prepare to pretty up your home. This method works for pet cleaning as well.

Reduce Extra Work

You can find yourself cleaning the same areas multiple times if you don’t take a few precautions as you work. You should have a mat by the doors so that most dirt brought into the house will be left at the door. You should have mats outside the shower and other places where water is likely to be tracked. When you cut down the amount of water and dirt tracked through your house, you can reduce your workload and ensure that you are only cleaning much of your house one time and one time only.

Get Rid of Clutter before You Clean

Before you start on any serious spring cleaning, see what things you can get rid of or just get out of the way. You can pack away the toys and books, do some laundry and keep the floors and shelves clean. This allows you to better see what needs to be done and make sure that you do a thorough job and don’t miss any spots in need of cleaning. You might want to get the other household members to join in and help you too, whether they are family members or roommates. Let them know that you plan to do some spring cleaning so that you can have them and their things out of your way as you work.

Clean Windows on Cloudy Days

You might be waiting for a nice, sunny day to clean your windows and do some of the other chores, but that can be a bad idea. The sunlight can actually dry out the windows too fast as you are cleaning, and that will leave behind streaks that you were not able to wipe off in time. Be sure to wait until the sky is cloudy to clean the windows, as that allows them to dry slower and look streak free when you are finished.

Clean under and behind Everything

Some of the worst, most strenuous cleaning you have to do is behind the fridge and freezer and under the couches and tables. Those places need to be dealt with, though, as they can have nasty buildups over time that lead to health problems, rotting, bad smells and bug infestations. You want to pay special attention to all those places that you don’t normally get in your day-to-day and week-to-week cleaning. It’s going to take some work to get to it all, but it will be so worth it to have every nook and cranny cleaned.

Make Microwave Cleaning Simple

To clean out your microwave, you just need to put a cup of water and lemon juice in the microwave and let it heat up for about two minutes. The liquid will cover the inside of the microwave and make it easy to clean just by wiping it down. Don’t microwave the water for too long, though, as it can become dangerously hot and spew all over you as you pull it out of the appliance.

Use the Right Cleaners

You are going to have some trouble cleaning the oven with anything other than an oven cleaner. Those other cleaners can leave behind residues and smells that are unpleasant and that can seep into your food as you cook. Be sure to use a designated over cleaner for this job.

For other jobs that have specific cleaners, such as cleaning tiles, getting rid of mold or cleaning windows, you need to use the right kind of cleaning solutions. This eliminates a lot of problems later on and keeps you from having to go back and redo the work later with the proper cleaners.

Water is a great cleaner, but it can’t do everything on its own. You may need to partner it with some lemon juice or baking soda for a natural cleaner that does a lot of the work for you. There are homemade solutions for many common cleaning tasks, so you can benefit from looking up those and find something appropriate for your home cleaning needs.

We hope these tips help you out as you plan to clean for the springtime. There is a lot of work ahead of you, but these little methods should be able to make that go much faster and simpler for you.
